Afghanistan was part of the dominions of the Shah of Persia Abbas.  The Persian Empire Used This Colorful Flag (1688-1747) (Flag Bulletin)

Nadir Afshar 1668-1747

 

Dethroned Emir Mahmud conserved Harat until his death in 1829. The Durani Clan claimed Heart from Persian Empire and The flag of Herat was green, white and green, surely the same one that or used the Durrani dynasty during its government in Kabul or Kandahar (Flag Bulletin)

The kingdom of Lahore (Then Part of Afghanistan) used near 1830 an equal national flag to the French tricolor by decision of the sovereign Ranjit Singh influenced by its French advisor, general Allard, exiled there. At the same time the white flag of the Borbones was used in France.

Kabulistan 1830

 

Dost Mohammad, During his first years (before the Sikhs in 1818), Kashmir (1819), Dera Ghazi Khan (1819), Dera Ismail Khan (1821) and Peshawar (1834). This Flag was used till 1901 and later modified a little.

Bakekzai 1880-1901

 

The Treaty of Rawalpindi of 8 of August of 1919 recognized the independence of Afghanistan. The design of the flag was modified in 1919, and the Constitution of 1922 confirmed its use.

Amanullah 1924-1928

 

Loya Jirga approved (final of 1928) the restoration of a new national flag, composed of three vertical strips, in the center; in the central band a shield with ears and a radiating sun, and a star; on the foot snow-covered mountains and a tape with the inscription " Afghanistan "

Amanullah 1928-1929

 

The reforms of the king Amanullah caused scrambled tribal runs and the head of bandits a Tajik Bandit Habibullah (well-known by Bacha-i-Saqao " the son of the water carrier ") captured Kabul (January of 1929) and settled down a new dynasty under the name of Habibullah Khan.

Bachai Saqao 1929

 

During the rebellion of the son of the water carrier, a flag similar to the Bacha i Saqao used in Herat in  the rebellion of the Tajiks of Kohistan.

The previous dynasty, expelled from Kabul by Bacha-i_Saqao, conserved the power in Qandahar. This flag was used in Qandahar as a transitional one until the adoption of the new flag in 1930.

1930, the religious emblem disappeared of the flag. The design (the size of the emblem and the color of the lateral branches) was durarero of the history of Afghanistan and was consecrated by the Constitution of 31 of October of 1931.

Nader Shah 1930-1973

 

Nader Shah adopted the Red flag, which symbolizes the Royal Flag of the King and not the Flag of the Kingdom. The flag continued being the approved one by the Constitution of 1931 Zahir Shah who reigned during forty years. In 1934 it adopted a new real standard.

Zahir Shah adopted the Red flag, which symbolizes the Royal Flag of the King and not the Flag of the Kingdom. The flag continued being the approved one by the Constitution of 1931  In 1934 it adopted a new real standard.

Daud Khan overthrew his Cousin King Mohammad Zahir and established a Republic. A counterrevolution tried in September under the direction of ex- prime minister Maiwandwal and several military, failed. The 9 of May of 1974 the new republican flag was adopted.

Republic Flag 1974-78

 

31 of December of 1979. The Party had been equipped with a flag. Hafizullah Amin Prime Minister that determined a change of flag, which would happen to be red (the republican standard with the shield and Wheat in the middle stood for workers. 

Socialist Flag 1977-1987

 

Before the 9 of October of 1979 Amin started and succeeded a coup d'etat. The faction " Khalk " (Masses)  (Flag),. The red flag was made official few days later, the 19 of October.

Khalq 1978-1980

 

21 of April of 1980 the new flag was adopted, that consisted of the old republican but with the three equal strips, and with a new emblem (which diverse previous proposals are known).

Parcham 1980-1986

 

On 30 of November of 1987 a new Loya Jirga met that approved the new Constitution  and chose to Najibullah the president and Muhammad Hasan Sharq prime minister. The flag was not modified in its colors but if in its emblem, of which the red star disappeared and a Islamic aspect occurred.

Najibullah 1987-1992

 

In the parade of opening of the Olympics Games of Barcelona (18 of July of 1992) Afghanistan it marched past with the legal flag of the country. The New Flag was designed removing the Red which stood for Bloodshed from the national Flag.

Mujahid Transition1992

 

On 2nd of December  Rabbani was re-elected president by two years and by means of presidential decree, the official design of the national flag, consisting of three strips was approved horizontal, green, white and black, with the shield of the gilded country in the center.

Rabbani 1992-1995

 

This flag, apparently a reconstruction by Taliban regime. The Shahhada was used in the middle of a white flag symbolizes their faith in Islam on a Pure Land. (In communication with Abu Mujahid, member of the representation of the Flag will be placed upon a vote once peace returns.

Taliban 1995-2001

 

The Pashtuns of Pakistan were claiming their independence and established their own flag supported by Afghanistan, which till this day is recognized as the Official Flag of Pashtunistan.

Pashtunistan 1951-75

 

In the North the resistance of Masud in the  Panjhir, Dostum controlled Mazar-i-Sarif and Hekmatyar joined opposition to Taliban have raised this flag with the use the republican flag (already with the green one in the inferior part) but with the emblem, placed near the spear.

Northern Alliance 1997

 

The Official flag of Afghanistan: Black represents the occupation of foreigners, the Red represents the blood of freedom fighters, and the Green represents freedom and Islam.
